Chows and Mainecoons
Hello and welcome to Tomorady Chow Chows and Mainecoons.
Our Dogs We are the very proud owners and exhibitors of Chow Chows. We have been involved with breeding dogs for 25 years, but only discovered the utter joy and total devotion of Chows for the last 8 years. Tomorady Chow Chows is made up of my Husband- Stephen, myself-Rhiannon and our 3 Children-Tomos, Aurora and Teddy. Our Kennel name is an amalgamation of the Children's names. The children adore the dogs too and would take them to school with them if they were allowed! We originally wanted a breed that would allow us to keep our dogs along side my parents Newfoundland's and Our Saints (though we don’t have these anymore due to my own health reasons- my broken pelvis) We needed a breed that could stand up to such big dogs, and would give the children an introduction to showing that wasn't too dissimilar to the giants. Our Son Tomos was very keen to start showing too but at just 6 years old we felt he wasn't strong enough to handle a Newfie or Saint in the Show ring. We thought long and hard about which breed to go for, for him. It had to be tough enough to withstand exercise with Newfoundland's and Saints, to enjoy being outside with us. We didn't want a lap dog either as although he was young and small then, we knew he wont be for long! In the end we chose a Chow Chow (as Mum had experience with the breed) and Marzipan was the result! Marzipan was a delight and cemented our adoration for the breed. Aurora and Teddy have since caught the bug too and they love showing the Dogs too. My Mum Hayley grew up in Hong Kong with her Military Parents and had a cream Chow Chow there that was call Mikkimoto, hence their new prefix. We are very lucky that the 3 of us all have different strengths, so we work together to endure that our Dogs, Puppies and Owners get the best experience possible. I handle in Show ring (with the children) and Run the Kennels, as well as my social media and website. Hayley (Mum) tends to focus on rearing the puppies and Beth is great at night shifts. We are very lucky to have over 20 acres of pasture and river side in the stunning Brecon Beacons to both exercise and play with our dogs. We have been showing our dogs with some lovely results so far. It is hard juggling a young family, full time jobs and showing, so we don't go to as many shows as we would like but as the children get older this will become easier (we hope!) As our other children have got older we have added to our Chow Chow team as they are keen to get onto the show ring themselves. We are delighted that we have been placed at Crufts for the last 3 years with our Chow Chows (pre Covid) though we will be back in the ring in Spring (2022) so far we have 7 dogs qualified for Crufts 2023. Please see our 'Show results' for full details of our outings Please have a watch of our interviews with Animal Watch below too to get a feel for us and our Dogs. Our Cats
our Mainecoons and British Short haired are our newest passion. We have been considering different Cat breeds for some time. As a child my Parents had bred Siamese and Siamese Snow Shoes, and we had had Ragdolls as family pets. We had researched many breeds such as the mainecoon, Ragdoll, British Shorthairs and Bengals. Mainecoons came about as a happy accident. I was approached by a lovely women who had been breeding Mainecoons for the last 20ish years. She wanted a new challenge in her life and thought a Chow Chow was that challenge. Within a few months she had rung us and said that she had a suitable kitten to join us. The kitten settled in so seamlessly into our lives that before long we had 7 absolutely gorgeous Mainecoons and we knew we were smitten! Aurora also wanted a cuddly friend and with another Chow Chow connection we met another wonderful family who helped us find our first couple of British short haired. both breeds are wonderful in such funny and unique ways and we are so blessed to be able to have both breeds in our lives. |
